Responsibilities:
  • coordinating a team of four content designers to create fresh content for the new SEFE intranet
  • editing content for consistency and to ensure all intranet text is clear and user-focused
  • designing and publishing intranet pages in Appspace
Achievements:
  • managed the smooth and efficient supply of content to meet SEFE’s December 2024 intranet launch
  • delivered 30% more content pages than initially agreed with the client
  • collaborated with a translator to ensure all key content was published in both English and German

University of Cambridge

January to November 2024
Senior content strategist on major content migration project for the University of Cambridge

Responsibilities:
  • developing the content strategy for the migration of University of Cambridge public intranet sites to a new secure platform
  • co-ordinating a team of four content designers to review sites across the Cambridge web estate and estimate the volume of intranet content for direct migration, editorial development or deletion
  • collaborating with stakeholders across the university to understand the different needs of a wide variety of intranet users
Achievements:
  • developed a successful process to audit websites and rapidly build an effective picture of user needs across Cambridge intranet sites
  • developed a content strategy for the migration of Cambridge HR content that was scaled to develop a migration plan for other university intranet sites

University of Oxford

March to December 2023
Lead content strategist on major content migration project for the University of Oxford

Responsibilities:
  • auditing a sample of University of Oxford intranet and public-facing websites of varying sizes to understand user needs and develop a migration strategy
  • using data to analyse published content, understand which pages are most valuable to users and develop strategies to reduce the overall page count
  • collaborating with stakeholders across the university to understand the function of Oxford websites and the audience they serve
Achievements:
  • developed migration content recommendations that fed into a new, university-wide content strategy to provide clarity for users and publishers
  • developed an approach to presenting content audits that helped site owners to understand migration challenge at-a-glance and communicate content strategies to stakeholders
  • ran workshops with key Oxford website and intranet teams to review my content recommendations and work with them to develop plans for long-term content improvements

European Central Bank

February 2023 to March 2023
Lead content designer on the European Central Bank (ECB)’s Banking Supervision website

Responsibilities:
  • auditing all pages on ECB’s Banking Supervision website to understand the site and review published content
  • using data to gauge the effectiveness of website content and recommend pages for editorial updates or deletion
  • making recommendations for the development of ECB’s Banking Supervision website and developing strategies to ensure content is user-focused
Achievements:
  • improved navigation for users by identifying a large number of redundant and outdated content pages for immediate deletion
  • developed an editorial strategy to dramatically reduce the website page count by merging a large number of short content pages into user-focused guidance
  • presented content recommendations to key ECB stakeholders and worked with individual teams to implement content improvements

Home Office

October 2022 to January 2023
Lead content designer on development of new UK government security website

Responsibilities:
  • writing, rewriting and editing all content for a test site designed to be a single source of information for all staff and contractors working in UK government security
  • collaborating with departments across UK government to understand their needs and how to balance security protocols with the need to share information with users
  • editing official security guidance documents from a variety of different government sources into single, user-focused content pages
Achievements:
  • collaborated with an interaction designer to create the test site from scratch and populate it with new, user-focused content
  • created a test site that, in final presentations to government stakeholders, was judged to be effective, useful and easy to navigate
  • using daily feedback on a fast-paced project to iterate the test site and balance the needs of different users and government departments

Essex County Council (Essex Schools InfoLink)

January 2022 to September 2022
Lead content designer on website migration project for Essex County Council, United Kingdom

Responsibilities:
  • auditing over 10,000 pages and downloadable documents to understand the volume of work involved in the migration of staff content from Essex Schools InfoLink to a new council website for education professionals
  • using data to identify priority content that should be migrated to the new website
  • collaborating remotely with service teams to restructure and rewrite content and reduce the volume of pages on the new website
Achievements:
  • developed the information architecture for each section of the new website, which was used to restructure content and plan a smooth migration
  • identified over 3,000 inaccessible or outdated downloadable documents for immediate deletion
  • developed prototype pages for user testing sessions, which were judged by test subjects to be clear and effective

Essex County Council (Essex Library Service)

November 2021 to December 2021
Lead content designer on website migration project for Essex County Council, United Kingdom

Responsibilities:
  • auditing all published pages on the old Essex Library Service (ELS) website to identify key content that should be migrated to the new ELS site
  • using data to highlight content pages that have poor views and should be considered for deletion
  • working with service teams to ensure that content on the new site is written in a user-focused style
Achievements:
  • used data to identify content that is not valued by users, which guided service teams to focus their efforts on priority content
  • drafted a new information architecture for each section of the new ELS website, which the digital team used to plan content support for the next phase of the project and deliver key information to users in a streamlined, user-focused format
  • worked closely with service teams to create exemplar content, which was used in the next phase of the migration project to guide content writers and editors

Buckinghamshire Council

June 2020 to November 2021
Senior content designer on website migration project for Buckinghamshire Council, United Kingdom

Responsibilities:
  • auditing content across four Buckinghamshire Council district websites, and identifying which pages should be migrated to the new unitary council site
  • collaborating remotely with subject matter experts across a wide variety of subjects – including education, health and childcare – to rewrite information in a user-focused style for a diverse audience
  • mentoring new content designers employed by the council to share best practice, and to help them understand the power and value of effective content design
Achievements:
  • developed and wrote new content for the Buckinghamshire Council Family Information Service (FIS) that was judged in user testing sessions to be effective and easy to follow
  • worked with internal teams to determine a tone of voice for FIS content, and wrote content aimed at both young people with special educational needs and their parents
  • made the new FIS microsite easier to navigate by running user testing sessions on prototype pages, and using feedback to recommend improvements to the third-party agency designing the website templates

Credit Suisse

September 2019 to June 2020
Content designer on intranet relaunch project for Credit Suisse, a global bank based in Switzerland

Responsibilities:
  • working remotely with stakeholders and subject matter experts to understand and document user needs
  • collaborating with subject matter experts to present complex financial and organisational information in clear, engaging English for a general audience
  • collaborating with UX designers to build flexible page templates that create a positive user experience
Achievements:
  • developed a content strategy that led to a huge reduction of intranet content pages, with significant improvements to user satisfaction
  • ensured long-term improvement by developing best practice writing manuals to guide subject experts after my role on the project ended
  • integrated existing systems such as expense filing and room booking into new intranet templates, and collaborated with service teams to ensure that global differences in service provision were explained

Department for Education

January 2018 to September 2019
Content designer working on GOV.UK content updates and long-term improvement projects

Responsibilities:
  • writing and editing high-quality, user-focused, timely, engaging and accurate content, and ensuring all new content served the needs of the department and a variety of users
  • collaborating with stakeholders and subject matter experts across the department to understand user needs, edit content, and promote the benefits of presenting content in clear English
  • converting PDF guidance documents into online manuals that were searchable and easy to update, and monitoring these manuals to ensure they were regularly reviewed and relevant
Achievements:
  • coordinated complex projects such as the Care Leaver Covenant that required input from a large number of government departments
  • redesigned key content pages at short notice to reflect policy changes in a fast-moving political environment

British Red Cross

October 2017 to January 2018
Content designer developing new content across a variety of departments for a major Redcross.org.uk relaunch

Responsibilities:
  • collaborating with stakeholders and subject matter experts to understand and document user needs for fundraising, donation and corporate partnership content
  • writing and editing user-led content that was engaging, accurate and presented in clear English
  • working closely with subject matter experts, user researchers and business analysts to develop pages that created a positive user experience and met the charity’s business needs
Achievements:
  • reduced the number of website pages from 4,000 to under 400 by streamlining donation, corporate partnership and fundraising content
  • worked with UX designers to develop website templates that were suited to a wide variety of content types
